When a used engine is the right call

A used engine is pulled from a donor vehicle, inspected, and sold as-is with its original internal components. It makes sense when the repair cost on your current engine approaches or exceeds what the car is worth, and when the rest of the vehicle has real life left in it.

It makes less sense if the vehicle has significant rust, a failing transmission or other deferred repairs waiting behind the engine, we would rather tell you that on the phone than sell you an engine for a car that is finished. If the vehicle is not worth saving, we also buy junk cars outright.

Used, rebuilt or remanufactured — the practical difference

These three terms get used loosely, and the difference matters to what you pay. A used engine is a complete unit from a donor vehicle, inspected and sold with its original internals. A rebuilt engine has had its worn components replaced. A remanufactured engine has been fully disassembled, with components machined or replaced to OEM tolerances.

Remanufactured units cost the most and used engines the least, so the choice comes down to how long you intend to keep the vehicle. For a car with a few more years in it, a tested used engine is usually the sensible economics.

Short block, long block or complete engine

What you need depends on what failed and what your mechanic is planning. A short block covers the engine block, crankshaft and pistons, suitable when you are reusing your own cylinder heads. A long block adds the cylinder heads and valvetrain. A complete engine includes the major accessories and is the most straightforward to install.

Tell us which your shop wants when you call. Ordering a short block when the installer expected a complete engine is one of the more expensive misunderstandings in this business.

How we source, inspect and test engines

Every engine we sell comes out of a vehicle processed through our own Aurora yard, so we know its history rather than buying blind from a broker. Before an engine is offered for sale it goes through a visual inspection for wear, scoring and damage; compression testing to confirm the cylinders hold; and mileage verification where documentation exists. Inventory rotates daily as new vehicles come in, which is why we quote by phone rather than publishing a stock list that would be wrong by Thursday.

This is where used engine purchases go wrong, so it is worth being precise. Before we pull anything, we check the donor vehicle’s year, make, model and engine code against your application. It lets us verify the exact engine specification your vehicle left the factory with, rather than working from trim-level assumptions and trim assumptions are where most fitment errors originate, particularly on model years offered with several engine options. Warranty — what is covered and what is not

Our used engines carry a warranty against defects in the engine itself. It does not cover wear items, installation errors, or damage resulting from improper fitment, which is precisely why we verify compatibility before dispatch rather than after.

Terms vary by engine type and by the age of the unit, so ask for the specific warranty on the engine you are quoted and get it in writing. Any supplier reluctant to put warranty terms in writing is telling you something useful.
